Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s creator, is not a novice when it comes to speaking in favor of societal good.

While he has been preaching for the booming cryptocurrency industry to work towards the betterment of society by using their now-privileged status for a while now, he backed his preachings by leading through example.

A generous donation

It was recently announced by the SENS Research Foundation that it had received a donation of $2.4 million in Ether from none other than Buterin himself.

Initiated by Doctor Dr. Aubrey de Grey, the work of SENS’ Research Foundation is focused on battling the diseases of aging by learning more about them and developing medicine solutions accordingly.

According to Buterin, he got interested in the concept by reading Ending Aging, the book written by Dr. de Grey and Michael Rae. He further mentioned that, in his opinion, it was something that has the potential to change human lives and make them better in the future, which was one of the reasons why he donated to this cause.

Vitalik Buterin said in a statement:

“I’ve been a fan of Aubrey’s work since I first read Ending Aging when I was a teenager, and I am happy to have been blessed with the opportunity to personally support SENS’s efforts.”

He concluded:

“Their focus on creating solutions to the diseases of aging, one of the greatest problems facing humanity, is very much in line with my goal to positively impact the lives of millions of people around the world.”

More about the Sens research foundation

The SENS Research Foundation is based in California. Launched in 2009, the non-profit focuses on finding medicine solutions for aging-related diseases such as heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and cancer.

In addition to researching medicine solutions for these diseases and issues, the foundation aims to create awareness for them. That is why it also participates in and encourages informational activities for the general public along with training new researchers in the field.

The SENS’ Research Foundation had earlier received another generous donation in cryptocurrency, that time in Bitcoin and from someone, or a group of them, who wanted to keep their identity anonymous.

That donation had been carried out by the Pineapple Fund, which is run anonymously.

Vitalik Buterin has set an example, let’s see if others would follow

Buterin had recently lashed out on the part of Ethereum and cryptocurrency community, who have not only been reveling gaudily in its success but has apparently not been giving back to the community.

He had recently stated that all communities from the cryptocurrency industry “need to differentiate between getting hundreds of billions of dollars of digital paper wealth sloshing around and actually achieving something meaningful for society.”

He had then continued by tweeting that if things kept like this, then it will not take him long to leave for good.

Buterin wrote:

“If all that we accomplish is lambo memes and immature puns about “sharting”, then I WILL leave.”

However, he had also mentioned that he had high hopes in the community.

He had concluded:

“Though I still have a lot of hope that the community can steer in the right direction.”

He was not wrong by the looks of it because the Pineapple Fund, which belongs to the cryptocurrency community itself, has donated to 44 charities so far out of its $86 million committed reserves.

It will not be surprising to see if more people follow this charitable path and give back to the community to show others that the cryptocurrency industry is not all about taking power into its own hands, but also about helping others when it is fortunate enough to do so.
